ACEH VOYAGERS 2024

A journey of purpose, learning, and connection.

In December 2024, a group of passionate individuals from Emaan Catalyst Community (ECC) embarked on a Youth Expedition Project (YEP) to Aceh, Indonesia. Over the course of 10 meaningful days, the team engaged in community development, cross-cultural learning, and educational outreach with two primary partner schools—Fajar Hidayah School in Banda Aceh and Darul Hijrah in Gayo Lues.

While the trip was planned with structured objectives, what unfolded far surpassed expectations. It was not just about serving others; it was about being transformed through the stories, strength, and spirit of the communities we had the privilege to engage with.

Serving with Purpose

Our mission was simple but profound: to serve. We ran a range of programs, including English language camps, hygiene and waste management workshops, design thinking sessions, social media awareness, and even planted durian trees as part of a sustainability effort. From the get-go, it was evident how much the local students craved engagement, knowledge, and inspiration.

At Fajar Hidayah, about 80 students and 20 teachers welcomed us warmly. We delivered sessions that were both educational and interactive, ensuring that learning came with laughter and joy. The highlight was seeing how quickly the students picked up new skills—from singing English songs to engaging with technology during our social media workshops.

In Gayo Lues, however, we faced a new challenge: scale. We were met by over 290 students and
40 teachers—all eager, all hopeful. Our team, although small, rose to the occasion. Through mass activities, breakout group sessions, and team creativity, we adapted and delivered impactful experiences to everyone.

Reflections from the Ground

For many of us, the real impact of the expedition was not just in what we taught—but in what we learned.

From the local communities, we saw resilience in its rawest form. In Banda Aceh, our visits to the Tsunami Museum and conversations with the community reminded us of the 2004 disaster’s deep scars. And yet, these communities didn’t just survive—they rebuilt with dignity, rooted in faith and fortified
by unity.

In Gayo Lues, we were deeply moved by the story of Darul Hijrah School, founded and preserved over nearly 30 years under challenging circumstances. Its founder, a Singaporean who relocated to continue his mission, became a symbol of unwavering commitment to education and community service.

ECC YEP Leader Hilmy reflected, “What truly impacted me is the incredible mental fortitude and character of the Acehnese and Gayonese people. Their spirit of contentment, perseverance, and constant striving was truly humbling.”

Inspiration Through People

Beyond the community engagement, one of the most unforgettable parts of the journey was the bonds formed within the team and with the locals. Getting to know our fellow teammates—their personal challenges, life goals, and reasons for being part of this mission—was inspiring in itself.

As participant Nadhirah Mazelan shared, “They were an inspiration, teaching me invaluable lessons simply through the way they live their lives with purpose and passion.”

We were equally inspired by the young students we met. Their morals, manners, and enthusiasm reflected the strong character-building foundations of their pesantren. Their eagerness to learn and deep respect for their elders reminded us that true education goes beyond textbooks—it's about shaping individuals with integrity, empathy, and heart.

Culture that Speaks to the Soul

A true highlight was experiencing Aceh's vibrant and diverse culture. The cultural performances prepared by the students were nothing short of magical. Each performance was unique—some completely unfamiliar to us—yet filled with such energy, pride, and creativity.

These moments weren’t just entertaining; they were deeply touching. The effort and passion the students poured into showcasing their traditions spoke volumes about their identity and pride. It was a reminder of how culture can unite and elevate communities, and how important it is to preserve it.

What’s Next: Lessons and Legacy

As the trip concluded, we took time to reflect on how this journey had changed us. For many of us, it renewed our appreciation for the stability we enjoy in Singapore. It opened our eyes to different ways of life, different struggles, and above all, different kinds of strength.

We also saw endless potential. We identified opportunities for long-term collaboration—sustainability projects, education exchanges, and more. Our hope is to return not just once, but continually—to grow, learn, and contribute meaningfully.

We also learned what could be done better: future expeditions could focus on one region at a time, or have longer durations to create deeper impact. Better flight planning, including exploring different routes to cut travel time and costs, would help maximise on-the-ground engagement.

A Call to Youth and Organisations: Join the Journey

The Aceh Voyager expedition reminded us that growth happens when we step out of our comfort zones and into someone else's world. It happens in classrooms with dirt floors and bright-eyed students. It happens through shared meals, language barriers, and moments of vulnerability.

If you're a young person seeking purpose, or an organisation looking to empower youth through meaningful service—we invite you to be part of our next journey.
